This gathering at the 35th International Association of Blacks and Dance Conference in Pittsburgh, PA was special. Facilitated by Sean McLeod-Founder of Reaching for Higher Ground Consulting, panelists included Karen Brown, University of Missouri at Kansas City Dance Professor, and legendary Ballerina of Dance Theatre of Harlem Fame, William J Ferguson II, former Garth Fagan Dance Executive Director & founder of The Ferguson Group Consulting, and Kierstyn Zaykoski-National Director of the New York Institute of Dance & Education and Reaching for Higher Ground Consulting, and Principal Dancer of the Kaleidoscope Dance Theatre.
“Two Black Voices: Workshop”,
Supported by the NEA, this year long scholarly process asked the question, do Black-created dance techniques exist? The Research Leads, Sean McLeod-President & Kaleidoscope Dance Theatre, and former Garth Fagan Dance Executive Director William J Ferguson II, compare and analyze the two under-treasured Black-created dance techniques; McLeod Technique and Fagan Technique, through an in-studio workshops and scholarly discussion.
